Cher is reflected in the best and worst moments of her life in her new book, Cher: Memoirs, Part 1. In a particularly heartbreaking chapter, Cher looked back at his marriage to fellow singer Sonny Bono.

The "Believe" singer first met Bono in 1962 when he was 16, and the American songwriter reported that he was 27 at the time and separated from his first wife. Cher and Bono officially tied the knot in 1969 and finalized their divorce in 1975.

The pair experienced huge professional success together, but Cher did not thrive in the relationship. In her new book, Icon shared that she felt "trapped" in a "marriage without love.""Often it feels as if there is no exit, who

told of a particularly harrowing night in Las Vegas in 1972 when Cher revealed that she had gone out to the hotel balcony and considered ending her life "I was lonely and dizzy," she explained. "I saw how easy it was to get over the edge and simply disappear," he says.

Cher continued, "For a few minutes, I couldn't imagine any other option. I've done this five or six times.

Explaining why she finally decided to oppose suicide, Cher referenced her young children, Chaz Bono, mother Georgia, and sister Georgianne. "[T]hings like this could make people looking up at me feel that it is a viable solution," Cher noted.

Ultimately, Cher's darkest moments led to the realization that she should not marry Bono. "I don't need to jump," she shared in the book. "I can leave him.

In an interview with the New York Times to promote her book, Cher recalled that she felt as if her husband was "like a parent.""It is said that the more famous the pair became, the more dominant Bono became.

"He took all my money," Cher told the outlet. "We just thought we were husband and wife. Half of the things are his and half are mine. It didn't happen to me that there is another way."
