John Legend's 8-year-old daughter, Luna, tries to negotiate a “compromise” on when she will have her own cell phone.

One of the most difficult decisions in modern parenting is, “At what age should my child get a cell phone?”

. Related to that, one of the biggest challenges of modern parenting is actually putting that decision into action. This is because every child seems to be a master debater ready to argue before the Supreme Court in an attempt to convince their parents to lower that number (whatever it is).

John Legend got a firsthand taste of this universal child power when his oldest daughter, 8-year-old Luna, interviewed him in a Billboard video about his new children's album, My Favorite Dream.

Before they began the actual interview questions about “My Favorite Dream,” the two had a brief father-daughter conversation.

“I've been getting some good advice lately about phones and social media,” Legend told Luna in the video. 'I won't give her a smart phone until she turns 16. What do you think?

Luna took the opportunity to try to convince her father.

She said, before Legend interrupted, “Compromise?”

And.

Now, to fully appreciate how bold a negotiator Luna is, we need to remember two important facts: 1.) 1.) Legend said that Luna is 16 years old when she has her own smartphone. Now, with these two numbers in mind, we proceed to the details of Luna's negotiations:

“Can we compromise on 9?”

Luna then asked. Luna suggested.

Legend, I say, immediately burst out laughing and replied.

After some negotiation (until the day Luna gets her own smartphone, and whenever that may be), Legend answered questions about the children's albums, but also touched on more personal topics like family.

“There are so many things,” he replied (from People) when asked what he loves “most” about his family.

“I think the purest love you can have, and that's love for your family.”

“It's so pure, me and my mom look at you guys, we look at our brothers and sisters, we look at ourselves. And we want to put all the knowledge and lessons we've learned in life into you and help you become the best adults you can be. That's what parenting is all about.”

Focusing on the best things in parenting is a good thing and will help Legend stay strong during the next eight or so years of smart phone negotiations (this is just for Luna; Legend and his wife Chrissy Teigen have three children, 6-year-old Miles, 22-month-old Esty, and 17 month-old Len), as well as three younger children.
