Celebrities who have transformed their regular wardrobes into chic maternity wear.
In the past, pregnancy clothes were very oversized, not to mention frilly and floral. These days, however, they can be worn as an extension of one's regular clothes. Celebrities have been quick to embrace this and repurpose “everyday clothes” during pregnancy and postpartum. They push down their jeans, opt for stretchy knit dresses, and wear crop tops (Rihanna, the coolest pregnant woman in the world, did this effortlessly). But this is not an entirely new trend: celebrities have been opting for bold maternity fashions for decades. Here are just a few examples.
If your shirt doesn't fit, wear a bra. Seriously, Jenna Deewan's lingerie-inspired look utilizes an oversized dress as a cover-up (and only needs to be buttoned up in places) to create a bold vibe without going completely naked. Also impressive is the fact that they don't look like maternity jeans, which have a special band that extends over the belly.
If the non-maternity bodysuit is stretchy enough (as long as you don't mind stretching it to fit your belly), it can be worn in place of a shirt. Ideally, it should feel snug and comfortable without being constrictive or blocking blood flow. These look like the wide-leg jeans Rihanna pushed down.
Soft, oversized silk tops make wonderful maternity shirts in early pregnancy. Silk does not have natural elasticity, but it drapes very well, not to mention it is comfortable during the body changes. It looks neat when put together in a similar color.
Model Nicole Williams English knows how to wear bold maternity styles. It's smart to roll down elastic-waist pants a couple of times and bring them low on the hips (like this). Wearing a crop top to show off the belly is a fun choice and one we'll see again.
Oversized oxford shirts are an absolute lifesaver during pregnancy (as are comfy sneakers like these, if we're being honest). Jennifer Lawrence wears her shirt open like a jacket, with an oversized T-shirt underneath.
Sienna Miller consistently had a great pregnancy look even before pregnancy became fashionable (this is from 2012). Honestly, this whole look could be non-maternity wear, from the low-rise jeans to the long top that acts as a tunic over the bump. Honestly, your wardrobe can be repurposed more than you think.
The Australian model shows off a simple but effective maternity style. It looks like an athletic or athleisure style top (useful because of its innate elasticity) and the pants sit low on the torso, below the belly. It's a great way to show off your new body type.
The great thing about Rihanna's maternity style was that it felt so genuinely casual (as if she just looked through her wardrobe and figured out what worked). This zip-up hoodie is long, but not so long that it completely covers her stomach.
If you have a gorgeous knit dress, now is your chance to wear it. Blake Lively looks fashionable and comfortable in a stretchy sunflower-yellow dress.
Hilary Duff, a mother of four, has mastered the casual maternity look perfectly. Her off-the-shoulder black bodysuit is both chic and comfortable. The green tie-waist pants can be tied or untied at the waist to wear as your body grows.
Even formal wear can be reused during pregnancy. Margot Robbie, wearing an asymmetrical shift with a mini cape, has opted for a more roomy shift dress shape. Such dresses work well in the early stages of pregnancy because of their loose, flowing design.
Emily Ratakowski (hence the mask), who was pregnant in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, shows that you don't necessarily have to buy maternity outerwear. This is an oversized denim jacket, worn partially open over a longer layer.
Long, flowing sweater dresses are a great option if you are pregnant during the colder months. They also make a great base layer under a warm coat, as Sophia (Richie) Grainge does.
In the '10s, this was the uniform of pregnant celebrities: short sweater dress, knee-high boots (Irina Shayk wisely wears block heels rather than well balanced stilettos), and that's basically it. For more coverage, she could opt for maternity leggings or tights.
Suki Waterhouse had a great casual style during her pregnancy. The transparent, floor-length top was styled in a genius way, offering a streamlined look while still allowing the skin to show through. The white shirt and black coat on the tops add to the sense of coverage.
This was 2006. Gwen Stefani admittedly goes for a very '00s aesthetic in this dress, with pants and UGG boots (to be fair, she's just casually out walking her dog). But this looks like a really great wrap dress. It's a great non-maternity maternity item and will work well throughout pregnancy.
Lily Aldridge shows that there are patterns that are perfect even during pregnancy (try saying that three times fast). When in doubt, choose a smaller, less assertive print and a longer hem.
In other words, if there is one ideal pregnancy look, it's this gorgeous pink outfit by Jodi Turner-Smith. The shift dress is a loose A-line, which suits her growing bump well. Notably, the accessories can remain the same as before pregnancy, but add sparkle and shine.
Just because you're pregnant doesn't mean you have to put tight clothes away. While this tan dress artfully encompasses Haley Bieber's bump, you can go for a smoother texture. A tonal (i.e., all one color) look helps everything feel incredibly cohesive.
Outerwear is a big deal during pregnancy. Sophia (Ritchie) Grainge wears an oxford undergarment, a big staple during pregnancy. By buttoning up all the buttons of her light coat and throwing a sweater over her shoulders, it almost feels like a dress.
Sophie Turner's maternity style was exceptionally cool (which makes sense since her non-maternity style is cool too). The overalls are a smart choice because they are loose around the belly (one can remove one strap if necessary).
In keeping with her professional style, Amal Clooney continued to wear her signature chic throughout her pregnancy. Thick wool shift dresses can be made into sophisticated workwear without being overbearing if you buy one or two sizes up from what you normally wear.
Proof that Madonna was a trendsetter of all things. (Again, this is a casual, makeshift moment for the star, but it makes sense that she would just want to wear what she likes.)
When Rihanna popularized the bare baby bump, it felt like a major innovation: here, she just tucked a regular shirt over her bump and pushed down a pair of loose, wide-leg pants to her low hips before leaving the house with a great She looks like she's accessorizing.
When in doubt, drape (and a little asymmetry). Hayley Bieber has given us pregnancy formalwear perfection: it's fun and short in places, in keeping with her style. The body is loose-fitting, soft and comfortable material. And it's full-coverage yet bold.
This cute mini by Sophie Turner is something many of us already have in our closets. There's no need to ditch the short hemline during pregnancy; it should be an extension of your existing style. The buttons on the dress accentuate the look.
Even back in 2004, maternity style was undergoing a fundamental shift. Courteney Cox changed nothing about her signature style, except for wearing a fitted shirt over a bump and opting for a wide-waisted denim skirt that could fit comfortably over a bump.
Honestly, athleisure (pregnant or not) is incredible. However, given that sweatshirts are oversized and tights have innate elasticity, they are a great “early pregnancy” choice. Sneakers also look surprisingly intuitive with a more casual look.
The kitten-like heels worn by Haley Bieber are the cutest (and give you a little lift without crushing your feet if you feel the need to wear heels while pregnant). Push down your loose jeans and add a white T-shirt with a hem that goes right above the pants for classic styling.
After Emrata wore this fabulous outfit in 2020, it felt like a new approach to maternity clothing. It's a simple, almost basic outfit, but by unbuttoning the oxford top to let the belly peek out, it creates surprise and fun.
Don't underestimate outerwear. Rihanna wears a gorgeous printed knit dress and an oversized leather jacket slung over her shoulders. If you need coverage and warmth, you can get some, but it also means you can repurpose a larger jacket.
As Sienna Miller proves, not all maternity wear needs to fit. Here, everything from collared shirts to skirts to long jackets is slouchy or oversized. But the contrasting colors and the structure of the jackets make for a well-thought-out look.
