Queen Camilla secretly previews “Lacey” TV series inspired by ex-husband; King Charles not a fan

Royal families are known for maintaining friendly relationships with their exes (just look at Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson), and Queen Camilla has an equally friendly relationship with her first husband, Andrew Parker Bowles. But it turns out that this former aristocratic “romantic” was the inspiration for a character in a popular new Disney+ series, and Camilla was the first to check it out.

According to the Times, Queen Camilla “adored ‘The Rivals,’ a racy TV adaptation of Jilly Cooper's novel. The show is a small-screen adaptation of Cooper's 1988 novel of the same name, featuring philandering Olympic jumper-turned-politician Rupert Campbell Black.

The Queen married her first husband in 1973 and has two children, Laura Lopez and Tom Parker Bowles, a former British Army officer and former girlfriend of Princess Anne, who will join the Royal Family for the first time this Christmas. Her Majesty the Queen and Parker Bowles divorced in 1995, but maintain an amicable relationship.

In terms of aristocratic circles, Parker Bowles, a former polo player and amateur jockey, also counts Princess Anne and Cooper, novelist of The Rivals, as close friends. 'He's been a great friend for a long time... That's why he looks so much like Rupert. He's beautiful, blonde, and charming,” the writer, who is also a friend of Queen Camilla, said of her character, Rupert Campbell Black, in an October episode of the How to Fail podcast.

Not surprisingly, Her Majesty the Queen was more interested than most in watching The Rivals. In fact, the media continued, “Camilla, a former jockey, was so eager to see the show that she was sent a preview before it was released to the public.”

“Rivals” is known for its sexy scenes, and the Times noted, “In the opening scene of the TV series, while Rupert Campbell Black, played by Alex Hassell, is joining the Mile High Club in a private Concorde bathroom cubicle, viewers will see his naked lower body viewers will see his naked nether regions,” he wrote.

If you're picturing Queen Camilla and King Charles curled up on the couch, awkwardly watching her fictional ex-husband busy at Disney+, you may be disappointed. According to the Times, Jilly Cooper's steamy show is not his cup of tea.

The King is “known to use a tablet, often to watch documentaries recommended by friends,” the magazine reports. However, Queen Camilla seems to have succeeded in convincing the King to watch the film adaptation of the more serious book, as he is said to be a fan of the BBC's Tudor drama Wolf Hall.

As for Prince Charles' relationship with Camilla, one court insider said, “If Prince Charles has been known in the past as a bit of an Eeyore character, the queen brings out his inner Tigger.”

Hopefully the King will be feeling more like Tigger when he heads to Sandringham House during the holiday season. From Prince William and Princess Kate to Princess Beatrice and her family, who were last-minute additions because her pregnancy meant they would be staying close to home for the holidays.

Prince Charles and Camilla will not only watch the king's annual Christmas speech, but will also take a walk in the countryside on Christmas Eve, enjoy a church service, and receive lots of silly presents.

Perhaps Camilla could even convince Charles to watch an episode or two of The Rivals while they are in Norfolk.
