Princess Diana is 'horrified' to see her on screen, sources say

If you like Princess Diana biopics, these are thrilling times. First, there is the upcoming season of "The Crown," in which Australian actress Elizabeth Debicki will play Princess Diana in the last years of her marriage to Prince Charles (replacing Emma Colin, who gave a fine performance as the young Princess Diana). And, of course, there is the hot new film "Spencer," in which Kristen Stewart plays the fateful Christmas weekend that ended her marriage to Prince Charles.

But according to royal expert Ingrid Sward, editor of Majesty magazine, who interviewed Princess Diana and knew her personally, the late Princess was probably not as enthused by this portrayal as people think.

First, Princess Diana would probably resent how her marriage would be portrayed on screen, Sward said in an interview with Express UK. 'She would be very sad that people think she and Charles didn't love each other. She would be horrified at the way she is being portrayed now."

Sward also had scathing words for "Spencer," directed by Pablo Larraín, who also directed "Jackie," about Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. The film is less a biopic than an avant-garde depiction of the pressures Princess Diana faced within the royal family, which, according to Seward, is not quite the accurate image she wanted to give.

"She piled on all kinds of bad things over the weekend. I don't think Diana ever saw herself as a victim."

"I don't think Diana ever saw herself as a victim. She saw herself as a single woman before the end of her marriage."

And while we tend to think of Diana as someone who played by her own rules, Sward says that would not have been how she positioned her role in the royal family. Sward said, "She would not have wanted to be remembered as someone who was destructive to the monarchy."

Spencer opens in theaters on November 5. Those who want to see for themselves how she approaches the subject of this lovable and complex woman are welcome to do so.
