Beyonce's name added to French dictionary

Beyonce's name added to French dictionary

Beyoncé has been a huge superstar for decades at this stage, but now she has reached an unexpected next level in her celebrity journey: her name has been added to the dictionary.

According to The Times of London, the French dictionary Le Petit Larousse has added 40 celebrity names to its 2025 edition, along with other relevant words carefully selected by a jury of experts.

Beyonce Knowles' name will be listed under the definition of "American singer of R&B and pop."

Beyonce's fans on social media seemed excited by the news, with one writing of "star power"

: one wrote "Creole French Queen," referring to the star's Louisiana Creole ancestry.

Beyoncé has long been one of the most successful women in entertainment, but to add this dictionary to her resume so soon after the success of her Renaissance World Tour and its associated concert film, as well as her new country album, Cowboy Carter, feels like a particularly poignant moment.

In addition to the "TEXAS HOLD 'EM" singer, the dictionary also includes entries for Cate Blanchett, Christopher Nolan, and LeBron James.

French actor Omar Sy (known in the US for his roles in "Lupin," "Jurassic World," and "Transformers") and soccer player Antoine Griezmann are also new additions.

As reported by The Times and French publication Le Point, other words included in the updated version include a number of terms originally from English, such as "skate park" and "fast fashion." Other new words include "kombucha" and "empouvoirement," which is the French version of the recently popular English word "empowerment."

For some words, dictionaries sometimes resist English terms, even if they are commonly used by French people in their daily lives.

"We always recommend French terms when incorporating common anglicisms," Bernard Serchigrini, an advisor to Larousse, told France Info radio (via The Times). "We tell people who open our dictionaries, 'Speak French if you want.'"
