Prince Charles References Kate Middleton's Cancer Diagnosis and the “Uncertainty and Anxiety of Illness” in Christmas Speech
King Charles broke with tradition in 2024 by delivering his annual Christmas speech not at the Royal Palace but at London's Fitzrovia Chapel. As well as being an unusual location, the King's speech also spanned emotional territory, as he discussed his and Kate Middleton's cancer journey. [I am speaking to you today from the chapel of the former Middlesex Hospital in London, now a vibrant community space in its own right. And I am thinking especially of the thousands of professionals and volunteers here in the UK and across the Commonwealth who, out of their skills and goodwill, care for others, often at some cost to themselves,” Charles said. [From a personal perspective, I offer my heartfelt thanks to the selfless doctors and nurses who have supported me and my family through the anxiety and worry of illness this year, giving us the strength, care, and comfort we needed,” the King continued. 'I am also deeply grateful to all those who offered their sympathy and words of encouragement.'
King Charles noted that his own health journey is by no means unique and referred to others around the world who are experiencing similar difficulties. He said, “We all experience some suffering at some stage in our lives. The degree to which we help and support one another, whether we are of faith or not, is the measure of our civilization as a nation.” This continually impresses me and my family when we meet and listen to people who have dedicated their lives to helping others.”
Reflecting on the “devastating effects of conflicts in the Middle East, Central Europe, Africa, and elsewhere,” the monarch turned to the “daily threat to the lives and livelihoods of so many people.”
Prince Charles, who had already paid tribute to medical personnel, praised “humanitarian organizations that are working tirelessly to bring vital relief.” Ultimately, King Charles' Christmas speech was an opportunity to reflect on 2024 while looking ahead to 2025.
