The best skin care for dry winter skin, a 5-minute moisturizing hack

I live in New York City, and like anyone who lives in the Northeast, it is my duty to shout out the winter cold at every opportunity. While it's fun to get into the holiday spirit with all that snow, the dry air takes a huge toll on the skin. Add to that the fact that I am getting married in a few weeks and have returned to a strict skin care routine of using tretinoin at least four days a week, and it is safe to say that my skin is drier than it has been in a while. Cue the best skincare for dry winter skin.

Thankfully, I've worked with some legitimate icons, and Marie Claire Beauty Director Hannah Baxter has a timely technique that she claims will banish dehydrated winter skin in just five minutes. “(For this hack) I stack a ton of moisturizer and give it about five minutes to sink into my skin,” she says in an Instagram time-lapse video, showing the product gradually disappearing over the allotted time. Finally, she rubs on the remaining product to show off a serious glow, a feat for the self-described owner of “really dry” skin. [Says Elizabeth Grace Hand, esthetician and founder of Stahl Studio. “Even oily skin can become dehydrated, especially during the cold winter months.” Yet it's not a trick that should be done every day, especially if you have oily skin. Hand says, “I would limit it to twice a week.” 'Think of it like a moisturizing mask. If you have acne, follow the same procedure, but stick to a noncomedogenic moisturizer.

My face was so peeling that I could tell it was peeling (seriously, don't look too closely at the corners of your nose), so I decided to give this technique a try. Apply your usual moisturizing serum (anything with hyaluronic acid), then apply a moisturizer for dry skin so generously that your face and neck can't absorb it right away. Then wait! Five minutes is usually enough for dehydrated pores to swallow the moisturizer.

In conclusion, the proof is in the pudding and you can see how effective this hack was for me. Just for fun, I applied my favorite full-coverage concealer, Anastasia Beverly Hills' Magic Touch. So, for my makeup lovers out there, this is your sign to use this hack to properly prepare your skin before doing a full face beat.

“This is a great trick because it not only gives the skin a great glow by leaving an extra hydrating, plumping, occlusive film on top, but it also protects the skin throughout the day and prevents further dryness,” Hand says. 'It's a must-have to get you through the cold winter months.'
